Flashing or strobe lights and/or travel alarms are sometimes used to emphasize the presence of a lift truck in the area.
Flashing lights are standard on all Crown elevated operator models such as stockpickers and turret trucks.
Flashing lights can be ordered as an option on other Crown models and are also available as an add on kit for field installation.
Travel alarms can be set to sound when the lift truck is traveling in forward, reverse or both. These will provide an audible signal when the lift truck is traveling in the designated direction(s).
Flashing lights or travel alarms may alert pedestrians to the presence of a lift truck in the area especially in low ambient lighting or restricted visibility.
These are some of the concerns about these devices:
- Multiple alarms and/or lights can cause confusion.
- Workers tend to ignore the alarms and/or lights after day-in and day-out exposure.
- Operators may transfer the responsibility of "looking out" to the pedestrians.
- Annoy operators and pedestrians.
The employer's decision whether to add a travel alarms or flashing lights is environment specific.
